Rum Ball Rhumba 2009
November 20th, 2009 by FiddledeedeeA couple of months ago, I won a bottle of Pineapple Rum from a charity event. I decided that I would hide it from myself, and a certain other adult I share the house with, so that I would have it when it came time for the annual Rum Ball Rhumba.
I’ve hidden things from myself before, in the hopes that I wouldn’t eat an entire column of Girl Scout Thin Mints in one sitting. But it seldom works. Yes, sometimes I do forget where I’ve put some highly sought after contraband, but then I tear the house apart looking for it. In a moment of weakness.
Sadly, such was the case of the Pineapple Rum. After a few “I’ll just add a little to this recipe, or that recipe, or a splash in my diet R.C. Cola, or WHO WILL NOTICE IF I DRINK STRAIGHT FROM THE BOTTLE”… well, needless to say that I must go shopping for new Rum for the Rum Ball Recipe.
Which I post. Every. Single. Year.
The Rum Ball Rhumba
- 1 Cup Powdered Sugar
- 2 T. White Corn Syrup
- 1/2 Cup Rum
- 2 1/4 Cups Vanilla Wafer Crumbs
- 3 T. Hershey’s Cocoa
- 1 Cup Chopped Walnuts
Combine vanilla wafer crumbs and walnuts. (You can moosh them up by placing them in a baggy and then beating the cra crumbs out of ‘em with a meat tenderizer, or using a food processor.)
Combine with other ingredients and mix thoroughly. Roll into 1 inch balls and then roll in extra powdered sugar or finely chopped nuts.
It’s a good idea to make these up to a week or so ahead of time and seal them in an airtight container. They “age” that way. However, this has never worked for me, since they don’t last long enough to make it into an airtight container. This year, however, I hope to pace myself.
You may have to re-form balls when you are ready to serve them.
Okay, if you have a recipe you’d like to share, leave it in the comments section, or link your specific blog post to Mr. Linky below. And show a little linky love by linking back here. There will be no Saturday Stirrings next weekend as I plan to take a nice long weekend with my family. And give thanks for all the blessings in my life. And be especially thankful if by the end of the weekend I’m able to zip my pants.

I just happen to have a favorite Thanksgiving recipe posted at this very moment, so I added myself.
I can’t believe that you make rum balls. Mama and her best friend, my Aunt Margaret, used to make these every year. One year, probably after imbibing a little too much of their ingredients, they decided to do a little experimenting. They made Bourbon Balls and Creme de Menthe Balls. All excellent. They went crazy for balls! I suggest giving it a go (though, as I remember, the Scotch Balls were pretty nasty).

Gretchen,
I cannot believe I never made these for Ladies Night. Or maybe I did. And they just never made it…

Oops! Dee, can you take out the #2 that says Green Chili Enchiladas? Didn’t catch it in time and it actually links back to the shrimp spread. I added it in correctly with #3 but don’t know how to remove #2. Gracias!

In the ingredients listed, it says ‘walnuts’, and in the directions it says ‘pecans’. Seeing as how I’ve never had a rum ball in my life (or even knew of their existence) I wonder which it is. Not that I would actually MAKE this recipe or anything. That would be cooking….and I don’t DO that.

Lisa,
Thank you. I fixed the pecan/walnut issue. You can actually use either. And the beauty of this recipe is that IT REQUIRES NO COOKING. I find it best, in fact, not to be anywhere near heat and/or flames when making Rum Balls.

My belly is warming up already! Can’t wait to make them!!! (How soft do they get if you add extra rum???)
And I’m going to use (inexpensive) white rum. The pineapple rum would have been an experiment.

Diana,
If you add extra rum, I guarantee you won’t care if they are soft or not.

Oh, one more thing… are you using your Pineapple Rum or just white or dark?

I just realized in reading this post that I think this is the 3rd time I have seen the rum ball recipe- hence realizing that I have been a fan of Fiddle for at least 3 years! Where has the time gone- keep up the good work, bloggernaut! You inspire and brighten my day- often to the point of snorting!
