Skinny Songs: A Review and a Giveaway

February 29th, 2008 by Fiddledeedee

I love music. And my taste in music is eclectic. Which is just a fancy way of saying that I have wild mood swings as far as my taste in music. Because it’s always changing.

Depending on my mood.

If I’m happy, I’m listening to bubble gum pop. If I’m mad, or at best wronged, it’ll be country. A hundred years ago, if a guy just broke up with me, you would hear Eric Carmen’s “I’m Never Gonna Fall In Love Again” wafting from my apartment, as I lay face down in the shag carpet.

Pitiful.

I need music. ESPECIALLY UPLIFTING MUSIC. What with my children trying to drive me insane and all.

skinny-songs.jpgI was asked to review the new CD, “Skinny Songs.” Oh my word, it made me laugh. Just some of the song titles alone are worth the price of admission. For example,

•Skinny Jeans
•I’m A Hottie Now
•The Incredible Shrinking Woman
•Think I’ll Go To Saks
•Objects in The Mirror

You can go here to listen to a sample of the soundtracks.

“Skinny Songs” founder and lyricist, wrote the songs to reflect her personal journey. She writes:

“About seven months ago I hit an all time high, I had gone from a size 8 to a size 14. Facing my 50th birthday, I did not want to enter the ‘back half’ not feeling good about myself, and at an unhealthy weight. Since music has always been a motivator to me, it occurred to me that maybe there would be great songs I could listen to while walking, or even in my car, that would
motivate me to succeed, much in the way ‘I will survive’ by Gloria Gaynor got many of us through a breakup. I couldn’t find any, so I wrote SkinnySongs.”

And don’t we all need a little motivation! It’s a cute, eclectic group of songs. And will have you tapping your toes.

And personally, I think it makes a mighty fine workout CD. And as an extra bonus, is masques the sound of my creaking joints when I’m doing my lunges.

About a year ago, I wrote a meme called “The Soundtrack of My Life.” One category I missed was “What is the song that motivates you?”

And now, if you’d like to win a copy of “Skinny Songs”, all you have to do is leave a comment and name your favorite motivational song.

I’ll leave comments open until 6:00 EST, Saturday, March 1st, and post the winner on Sunday.

Have a great and motivational weekend!

Oh, pick me! I’m sick again and am going to spend some time resting and not exercising for a few days, doctor’s orders. The song that gets me going is Everybody Dance Now! I post the youtube link whenever I hit a lower decade in my weight. :-D

    Those sound hilarious!

  2. kelli Says:

    Higher ground.

    Stevie Wonder.

    No question.

  3. Heather Says:

I will survive by Gloria Gaynor

  4. Tina R. Says:

Pick me! Pick me! I need motivation, haven’t worked out since before the holidays. Little bit of depression and alot of extra stress in my life :(

  5. Megan Says:

Thanks for the great giveaway…I’d love to hear the songs.
I am always motivated by Christian music, and turn it on every morning to start my day. I especially love “You Lift Me Up” sung by anyone!

  6. Christina Says:

    Nice giveaway.
My motivation is just about anything from Queen.

  7. Karen Says:

Definitely the song from Rocky – it keeps me going on the elliptical long after I thought I would die. That’s really corny, isn’t it?

  8. Kim Says:

DOWN by Point of Grace -

  9. GeeGee Says:

I love the taste of the music. Incredibly uplifting. Definitely want to hear more.
    Gee Gee

  10. Heather@mommymonk Says:

Rocky is definitely NOT corny Karen!!! Don’t we all hum that tune when we’re running on the beach. Oops, I only do that in my dreams.

Ok, for real. I blast Newsboys “Shine” to pump up my attitude, but I like Everbody dance now too. Anything that takes away a decade of my life is good! :)

  11. Elle Says:

I’ve been on bedrest the last few weeks and know myself to be stir crazy. So this morning I found myself belting out Born To Be Wild. I’ll claim that as my motivational song. Thanks for the chance to win.

  12. Lora Lynn Says:

    Bootylicious, by Destiny’s Child.

  13. Karen for you Says:

I don’t know if this is the name of the song but the first line goes, ” hey, hey, hey, hey beautiful day” love it. it’s a theme song for a cartoon my daughter watches.
I totaly love your blog and congradulations on hitting 200,000 views.

  14. Jen Says:

OK, can’t believe I’m admitting this but my favorite uplifting song that I listen to EVERY MORNING is… “Boingo” from the Backyardigans show. At least it’s written by Alicia Keys so it’s somewhat related to an adult :)

I also like “Turbo Lover” by Judas Priest because that’s the song we used to work out to when I skated competition – brings back good, thin, muscle toned, high-breasted memories!

  15. Kirsten Says:

I have to say that techno music is a motivator. I don’t know how you can listen to that kind of music and not want to start moving!

  16. Brandy Says:

“The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson. Not a big mike fan, but that song just has the best beat to it…. :)
    Brandy

  17. Shannon Says:

There are so many songs that get me motivated. I have very eclectic tastes in music, but one such song is the theme from Rocky. I’m not sure the name of the song, but it’s the one playing when he’s standing at the top of the steps of the museum (not sure the name of it). I’m pregnant with my 2nd, so I know this music will come in handy when I’m trying to get the baby weight off!

  18. Jenna Says:

ooh ooh please pick me, for the sake of my mortified 8 year old daughter. You see my jeans are actually starting to hide from me, and when I find them they groan when I put them on. Too attempt to help I actually started wearing ankle weights around the house while I am doing housework to attempt to make it easier on my daughter’s reputation, and my jeans but they feel like shackles. Too make matters worse my current favorite work out song is: (and even I am ashamed to admit this) Justin Timberlakes “sexyback”. My daughter is planning on going into the witness protection program if I play that and dance to it again. It is an amazing motivator in getting her to finish her schoolwork and chores though! lol Anyway I appreciate your consideration.

  19. Deedee Says:

Pretty much anything by the Celtic rock band Tartanic.

But also “I like to move it”, sung by the Lemur King in Madagascar. :-)

  20. Stephanie Says:

The theme from the movie Footloose gets me going. Love to listen to the whole soundtrack when I am cleaning house. I guess this dates me a little =)

  21. Heather Says:

Hmmm – DEF Leppard – Pour some Sugar on Me, Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi
    Footloose is good too.

And on a totally diffrent side of the spectrum – Jesus Freak by Dc Talk.

I will need this cd after I have this baby – I was already +15 lbs and I ALWAYS put on 50 lbs per baby! I will need serious help!

  22. Laura Says:

How about Boston’s ’something about you’
and Cindie’s ‘Girls just want to have fun’

    But really anything from Switchfoot.

  23. Nancy Says:

Ok, I agree with the Footloose and the Rocky theme, but I just had a memory flash of gym class in elementary school. I think the gym teacher had us doing jumping jacks and she was playing an LP (that’s a big record album for you young people) with lyrics something like, “Go! you chicken fat, Go!” Is that scary, or what? lol ;)

  24. Jana Says:

I won the Christmas give-away, but would LOVE this CD.
I have so many songs I love. My favorites right now are “Days of Elijah” and “Open the Eyes to my Heart”, anything Point of Grace (I heart them), but if I’m by myself (no children because the songs are not family friendly and no husband because he hates the songs) I love to listen to the soundtrack from RENT. Horrible morals, but GREAT music. In fact I enjoy most soundtracks. But the absolute most favorite is (please don’t laugh too hard) Barry Manilow. Who doesn’t start tapping their foot at least to “At the Coppa!”

  25. Lori Says:

I have never posted here before, but your website gives me my daily cheer each morning (and I’m not buttering you up to win!). My friends and I started a biggest loser challenge to get fit for the summer and I have sent this link to everyone.

I listen to hair bands of the 80’s to energize myself because as my 7 year old says “I’m old like that.” and it reminds me of when I was young and thin.

  26. Simply Sandy Says:

I would love to fit into my 14’s again…. 8’s are a distant memory from around the time of my first pregnancy 15 years ago! My workout playlist starts out with “Hotblooded” by Foreigner… but I am not sure I really wanted to admit that!

  27. Laurie in TN Says:

Christian Music lifts me up always. How about “Amazing Grace” when Chris Tomlin sign it?

I have so many favorites that I can’t just list one!

This album sound like FUN! I need to get skinny, too!

  28. Dee Says:

This is How a Heart Breaks by Rob Thomas

Every time I hear that song, I feel like running. Since running is great exercise, it’s a good motivator. The man is even running in his music video, for Pete’s sake!

  29. Adrienne Says:

That cd sounds like fun! I have some skinny jeans lurking in my closet that are reminding me that winter has not been kind to my hips!

When I’m on the treadmill or elliptical machine (which is hardly ever lately!), I like “Juicy” by Better Than Ezra.

  30. BLE Says:

It has to be I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

  31. Nora Says:

These sound hilarious! I think I can take the “unique” cateogry (or possibly just “weird”) with mine: the soundtrack to Lord of the Dance. It’s got everything, from tracks to lift weights to while I enjoy a delusion that my body will look half as good as those dancers, to power walking on the treadmill and pretending I’m marching to an some kind of unusually hip barn dance. For a slightly more normal-sounding song, I like “St. Elmo’s Fire/Man in Motion” by John Parr.

  32. Dixiechick Says:

What a great give away! The album sounds fun. My favorite motivational song…”Is there life out there” by Reba McEntire, because it helps me to realize, I can have a life and still have my family, be happy doing both.

I am currently on Nutri-System, struggling to lose 20-25 lbs myself. I also finally moved into this century and got myself and IPOD…I would love to have these songs to motivate me when I work out!

  33. Marti Says:

Wow, could I use that CD. I just found out my OB who has delivered all 7 of my kids is retiring soon. He gave me my whole chart to have for kicks. What a rude awakening to discover all the weight I had put on through the years with seven pregnancies. I need all the motivation I can get to lose the “baby” weight. Handel’s Young Messiah always gets me moving (It’s my house cleaning music). P.S. I live in Florida too and can totally relate to the frog horror you have experienced.

  34. Need A Nap2 Says:

Hmm can’t really think of any, I need this CD!!!

albums – (sounds really silly but the music is fast moving, helps me clean) Muppets’ Treasure Island soundtrack and Steven Curtis Chapman Greatest Hits

  35. Melene Says:

These songs would be so fun to add to my iPod!

Right now I love an Oldie for when I’m on the elliptical
    Instant Replay by Dan Hartmann!

  36. Laura Says:

Well would you look at that. I have never heard of this CD before and now I want it!!

Right now my motivational song is Beautiful by the Newsboys. Such a great song!!

Thanks Dee Dee…now please pick me so I can get my *** in gear :)

  37. Tara Says:

Depends on the genere. If I’m listening to Christian music “Blessed Be the Name” gets me every time. If I’m in the car listening to country “You’re Gonna’ Miss This” makes me have to pull over for a good “ugly cry” every time.

  38. Jana D Says:

“Take This Job and Shove It”, only in my mind as I exit the office every Friday afternoon.

Followed closely by “Cant’ Touch This” when I get home. Shortly after that, while I am placating ankle biters, it is “I’m Every Woman”.

  39. Judy Says:

I can walk miles on the elliptical belting out Toby Keith’s, Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue. I can ellipticize (made that one up) one-handed as I shake my fist and “ring my bell” (not really but Mother Freedom does so I do too).

  40. Francesca Says:

I see someone already mentioned the Jesus Freak album by DC Talk. Specifically, Jesus is still Alright. WOW!!! I can always give a little more in my workout when I’m listening to this!

Of course, Rocky does it for me, too. It’s not just the song but the visual imagery I get from the movies.

  41. Kim Says:

I love music and to dance, quite terribly, to it as well! Arise My Love by Newsong….
    I love your blog! :)

  42. jubilee Says:

Someone already mentioned one of my faves: I’m Every Woman. What a great idea for a CD!

  43. Tiffany Says:

Happy Girl by Martina McBride. I picked it as my theme song in college. I have the tendency to be a little pessimistic and get down about things. This song just speaks to me and tells me that it is my decision to be happy!

  44. Heather Says:

Sounds like a fun CD!! My current fave motivational song is “Awaken” by Natalie Grant. It gets my blood pumping every time!

  45. Julie Says:

I love “You Raise Me Up” by Selah. I like to sing along as loud as I can (but only when I’m alone! : ) ) I saw that someone else mentioned “Amazing Grace” by Chris Tomlin…love that song, too.

    3cookieday@gmail.com

  46. Billie Says:

My favorite motivational workout song is “Sexy Back” by Justin Timberlake although I also enjoy a good “Pump It” by the Black-eyed peas. I find I run a bit faster and without feeling like I may die when these songs are on!

  47. Jillian Says:

This is a great idea for a CD! Yes, please enter my name into the ring …er….disk.

The song “The Winner Takes it All” by ABBA…. is very motivational to me.
