My Friend The TV

July 16th, 2007 by Fiddledeedee

Since we got rid of our cable package, there’s not much to see on TV. We get decent reception, PBS, and a few main stations. Oh, the NASA station, TNT, TBN, and a couple of spanish stations. That’s it. And that’s fine by me.

I miss my Home & Garden TV shows, to be sure. But, too often, I would find myself glued to the latest episode of E’s True Hollywood Story. And the show would conclude, I’d be unfulfilled, and I would mourn the hour that I just lost from my life.

And really, life is too short. And those clothes piling up on the bed aren’t going to fold themselves. AND these people I live with want me to FEED them all the time.

Anyhoo.

I was perfectly content to be TV free until my favorite two shows start up again. IN 2008! That’s right, “24” and my beloved “Lost” don’t come back until January or February of NEXT YEAR. That’s just wrong.  The only other show I watch is “Survivor”, but really, they’re losing me. Ever since Dreamz went back on his word to Yau Man, I’ve lost all faith in mankind. At least the mankind you find on the likes of “Survivor”. And I’ve decided NOT to send in my audition tape after all.

And then Friday night, I found myself inexplicably sitting in front of the TV. For no reason. I was flipping through all of the channels, which without cable, only takes about 10 seconds, and I landed on a CBS show called “Jericho.”

header.jpg

I was riveted.

It’s about the lives of the people from a small town who survive a nuclear explosion. Since all communication and electricity are knocked out, there’s no way to know which or how many cities are affected. Or who did it.  It’s about survival, ya’ll.

I love a good disaster show.

And then I found out that this particular show was canceled. WHAT? BUT, because of viewer popularity, it has been brought back. And all the episodes are airing on Friday nights throughout the summer.

It seems other freaks viewers like a good disaster show as well.

And so, Fiddledaddy and I are getting up to speed by watching it from the beginning on CBS.com. Without commercial interruption.

I started to revisit the types of shows that I’m drawn to. And why. Lets see. There’s “Lost” where everyone is left on a mysterious island after a plane crash. There’s more danger than you can shake a stick at.

Do you see why I’m in such high demand as a television reviewer?

And “24” which deals with the threat of eminent nuclear attack at every twist and turn. (But at least they give you Keiffer Sutherland in a smokin’ tight t-shirt to ogle enjoy his acting prowess.)

And now “Jericho.” Which totally feeds my fear of all kinds of attacks on humanity. Real and imagined. Makes me want to move my family to a remote area and learn how to can our own food. It would be like camping. Everyday.

I hate camping.

Do you see why I’m so high strung? Couple all of that with my caffeine intake and I’m a flipping time bomb.

I had to say bomb.

So, as a television reviewer, I’m going to have to give “Jericho” a big thumbs up. I’ll be tuning in on Friday nights from now on.

And my Saturdays will be spent searching for my Lee press-on nails to replace the ones I’ve gnawed off the night before. By the time “Lost” and “24” come back next year, I’ll be typing with shorter fingers. And twitching uncontrollably.

I’m besot with anticipation.

Any other “Jericho” followers out there?

We love Jericho! I’ll warn you, it gets a little slow mid year. Hang in there though! The episodes that aired April-May are incredible.

We were so upset when CBS canceled it. Their dumb execs didn’t realize people have this thing called TiVo. Duh. I’m hoping that another network realizes what a gem they have there and picks it up.

  2. Tonja Says:

Sorry, not a Jericho fan…but, LOST…now there’s some fine television. I have watched it from the beginning and it just gets better. Except, I’m gonna need some Cliff’s Notes before it starts again…it will be sooooo long.

  3. Rocks in my Dryer Says:

We’re Jericho fans, too. Though I have to say that I think the earlier episodes were better than the later ones.

  4. Joy of course Says:

We started watching Jericho and liked it a lot in the beginning and then the plot lines on some of the episodes were really dumb, so we dumped it. But now that I read Gina’s post I think it might have improved again so maybe I will give it another shot. TV watching for summer is pretty pitiful these days.

  5. Laura Says:

My husband really liked it and watched it every week until it was canceled. I’m not a big TV watcher anyway, and the few episodes I did watch seemed to have really cheesy acting and plotlines, but maybe since it’s back on, we’ll have to give it another try!

  6. J. Fergie Says:

My hubby is. I can’t watch it – it’s too depressing! I admit that I have to make an exception for 24 though.

kudos on cutting back on cable. if we had any willpower at all, we’d do it too. we watch it all: HGTV, NOGGIN, Discovery Health, MTV, Showtime – it’s shameful :)

  7. Mysti Says:

Love love love Jericho. I was *so* glad they decided to bring it back. And not because they show Stanley scruffy and shirtless occasionally. Noooo – that has *nothing* to do with it.

    Much.

    You’re going to love it.

  8. Beth F. Says:

I have never heard of Jericho. Sounds interesting.

I have also never seen 24, but this line from you makes me want to rent season one, “Keiffer Sutherland in a smokin’ tight t-shirt.”

    I appreciate a nice tight t-shirt.

  9. Wendy Darling Says:

I caught the last half on Friday night. That is all I have ever seen of it, but I really liked it. I never thought of watching it on cbs.com . Thank you for reminding me. I think I will do that today. :-)

  10. Becky Says:

I saw about 3 of the first 7 episodes and loved it. But I am not a follower because I really, really, really do not watch TV. I don’t even know why I saw those few episodes. I should try to get addicted. But I have not beed addicted to a tv show since this one in the 70s with Bobby Sherman. Can’t even remember the name, but I can sing the theme song if you want.

  11. Grace Says:

    I. Love. Jericho.

When you see how the first season ends, you’ll understand why everyone was outraged that they canceled it.

Closure! At the very least, we need closure!!

  12. Vida Says:

They’re bringing it back? What does that mean, exactly? New episodes when school starts to keep me getting the kids to bed early so I drool over Skeet Ulrich? Or just the reruns that’ve been on TV lately? Even my hubs likes it, and he’s not a tv kind of guy.

  13. Steff Says:

i havent watched jericho, but in general the choices of network tv people are beyond me…
they cancelled some really good shows, left a bunch of GAME shows, and almost nothing left on is funny…
but also its hard to follow a show when they are continuously changing it…where its scheduled, day, time etc…
and also the run something 4 weeks then a different show for 4 weeks then a special or award show, then the original show… of course a lot of shows had lackluster performance, if i hadnt had TiVo set up i would have missed almost every episode of what about brian since they kept moving the stupid thing

we are both boston legal addicts and i like a lot of the crime shows but i dont like the disastery kind of shows

  14. Mandy Crowell Says:

    Hey girl
If you’re looking for some good television in the summer, and you said you have TNT, you should check out “The Closer” It has wonderful character acters, good dialogue and plot lines. And the season takes place in the summer, so new shows to watch! Monday nights are when it comes on. Also love to watch “Monk” on USA which has new episodes in the summer. These are my two “filler” shows until 24 and Lost come back again.

  15. Jana (sidetrack'd) Says:

I’ve never seen Jericho but have heard from a few people that it is very good.

We don’t have cable either, and I know there is nothing on, but I still find myself flipping channels sometimes; you never know what you might stumble upon.

    Enjoy your new-found show!

  16. tami@ourhouse Says:

We just ordered cable and it’s been giving me a good bit of blogging fodder. I’m sure the new will wear off soon, but we have only planned on getting cable until a month or so after our new baby is born (due Aug 31), and I’m loving it right now! Anyway, this is why we have not resorted to watching Jericho, when I still have the Food Network, HGTV, and my husband has that guy who survives by himself in dangerous places.

  17. Romie Says:

I have a love/hate relationship going with TV myself. I love Jericho, but only have time to watch it on-line. Also love Lost but never got into 24 for some reason.

  18. Joanna Says:

I love Lost and 24!! When we moved we couldn’t get it and we ended up going over to our friends house and had a Lost party. When they moved away I threatened my husband with bodily harm if he didn’t fix the situation and he did just in time so we were all caught up. Now we have to wait forEVER!
If we lived closer I would so let you watch Lost and 24 with us. :)

  19. Faerylandmom Says:

Alas…CBS is the only station we can’t get to come in. I certainly miss me some CSI too.

I’ve wanted to see Jericho – maybe we’ll have to go online as well and check it out. As for LOST…well…I’ll be waiting very impatiently as well. Cruel, cruel TV stations.

  20. Megan at Sortacrunchy Says:

We only have basic cable, too, and it is so liberating! Except for Monday nights (starting in January – always) when we find ourselves enslaved to 24 again. It’s a long-standing date night for the hubby and I, and woe to anyoe who would interupt! (I do think, though, that he and I are fans for different reasons. His reasons probably don’t include Jack Bauer in smokin tight t-shirts!)

I may just have to give Jericho a try now!

  21. Lori - Queen of Dirty Laundry Says:

We. Love. Jericho! The episodes on right now are repeats, right? I sure would have to think I’m missing the new ones; we’re so happy they changed their minds about canceling it!

I second the recommendation for The Closer on TNT. We love it.

  22. Stephanie Says:

We love “Lost”!!! And watching on-line is fantastic. We can watch on the laptop snuggled in bed.

  23. Alexis Says:

I’m a huge Lost addict. I just don’t understand why they wait so long to bring out the next season. I’m going to have to check this show out.

  24. Candace Says:

We don’t have cable either so it’s slim pickings around here when it’s TV time. I’ve been planning on checking out Jericho all summer and after your riveting review I’ll have to get on it. I heard about the viewer support for it and thought that it must be interesting for fans to get into such an uproar. I am a HUGE Lost fan too. I’m counting down until it’s on again.
Love the Lee press on nails comment- do they still make those things?

  25. MamaLady Says:

I lurve me some Jericho. Just wait until you see the first episode of season 2. SOOOO many questions answered.
You and Fiddledaddy are not the only freaks. While you don’t get smokin’ hot Kiefer, you get the southern gentleman (in Kansas, go figure) Gerald McRaney. A Mississippi boy, I might add.

  26. Tracey/real estate girl Says:

Haven’t seen Jericho, but I am a HUGE Jack Bauer fan and WILL NOT miss an episode of 24!

Plus, I love LOST too, but kinda “lost touch” (no pun intended) with it when they kept changing the times and replaying episodes from the week before, etc….

But I do want to rent this past season to catch up on it!

  27. Lisa (qtpies7) Says:

I was watching it, but it just totally got boring at one point, and I gave up on it.
What got me was Invasion. I LOVED that show, my whole family was just completely into it, and then it was cancelled. Before we found out if Larkin died, turned into an alien, or if they were aliens and where they came from and, and, and…. I was so upset. It was way better than Lost.

  28. CeCe Lane Says:

I dunno. I just go brave enough to start watching CSI: Miami. I somehow don’t think I’m ready for Jericho just yet.

  29. ExPat Mom Says:

I had never heard of Jericho, not what it was about, anyway, although I saw the name while my remote-happy hubby was flipping through channels. Sounds like something I would enjoy (I´m a disaster fan, too!). I never have the time to sit and watch shows, unless it´s Supernatural (gotta love Jensen), so the whole CBS watching is great!

  30. Geoff Says:

Ha ha…I don’t have cable either!!!

So, I def know what you mean…that’s actually the same way I came across the Jericho mini-marathon last Friday.

It’s a pretty good show!? I’m definitely going to have to watch over the rest of the summer, to get caught up for the new season.

Now, I finally know what all of this “Nutty” hype is about!

  31. Laura Says:

What? You aren’t watching Big Brother? No? Ummm….me either ;)
